Left: me
Right: :anna:

Anna and I have joined in the fun of the Divine Diptych Project for the first time this week. I think both of us felt that maybe we didn't have time for a weekly project, but ultimately decided the incentive to create was too good, and were greatly impressed by the diptychs created by the other ladies in week one.

Due to the time difference, with Anna being in the UK and myself being in Australia, our quick emails prior to shooting only covered discussion of format, and that Anna wanted to work in colour (I forgot to ask, but had this very colourful image in mind, so was relieved when Anna hadn't opted for B&W).

I also mentioned I had no issue whatsoever with mixing and matching format: landscape and square, portrait and landscape...

I love Anna's image, but initially was concerned about matching up the bold colours in my image with the beautiful muted tones in hers. But I think the echoing positioning of the shoes, the diagonals leading your eye from my image to Anna's and the red popping in both images brings them together much better than I'd have expected.

You can follow the project here, there's some wonderful artists involved.

It seems almost every time I post here I'm in a hurry these days. Although this weekend less so. I'm concentrating on my photography all this weekend, most evenings this week, and next Saturday.

I've been itching to create new work, get back to editing my backlog, and try to get some of the ideas that have been whirling around my head out of there and onto my camera's memory card. So far so good this weekend, with my first self-portrait shoot completed by 10am :D

However, I'm not making things easy for myself: I bit the bullet and joined a gym last week, including a "starter pack" of three 45 minute sessions with a personal trainer to kickstart my regime. But I am seriously unfit and was a bit too ambitious with my second workout, which meant I strained my right calf muscle again and was off my feet and off work for the past two days. Thankfully an ultrasound confirmed it wasn't torn, which my previous doctor had thought was the case, so it's getting better with rest and I should be able to think about returning to the gym for much more restrained attempts soon.

Suffice to say, between my current day job, the gym and a daily three hour round-trip commute, my time spent on photography is being somewhat restricted at the moment. But I am looking forward to flying down to Melbourne on the 22nd, spending a few days there, then a nearly two week road trip back to Brisbane with Phil Ivens and one of his friends. The highest priority (apart from ensuring we visit as many rainforests as possible, keep our verticals vertical and our contrast away from the high end) is photography, photography, photography. And sound recording. And, it seems we will be lucky enough to spend the Easter long weekend hanging out at a friend's property near the Blue Mountains!

When I return I will have to make a call about whether I find a place of my own closer to town for six to twelve months, until I am ready to head overseas; or stick it out here with my folks until then.

Meanwhile, it may be summer here, but it's been raining an awful lot for somewhere folk like to call "the sunshine state". Thankfully we're not in areas like Charleville which has been flooded thrice in five days :-S

These flowers? They're Winter Velvet Allamandas, which blossom in a darker hue in winter. I've been wanting to do a self-portrait incorporating these beauties adorning a trellis down the side of my parents' house for a while now, and with the overcast, raining-on-and-off weather today, the final image ended up with more of a winter than a summer look, which suited me just fine.

Hope you're all having a wonderful start to the weekend!

Thank you to everyone who voted for my portfolio in the Power of Self competition. After multiple extensions the People's Choice voting is now closed and judging on the major prize will commence next week.

Just before the final deadline I got an email about the extension saying that if you hadn't received a confirmation email, to let them know. I hadn't gotten a confirmation email, but had my PayPal receipt for my entry fee and could see my entry and had people voting on it, so thought everything was fine.

So I had a momentary panic that despite all that, by not getting the confirmation, maybe my entry wouldn't be considered valid, so I replied to let them know.

I got an email back this morning that said "You are all set, and your work looks beautiful!" I'm sure they said that to everyone in my situation; and the competition is being judged by external folk, like Steve Buscemi, not the main folk behind Artists Wanted, but it still made me grin and do a little hand-clap thing to get such a lovely message.
